Perhaps one of the most photographed moments of any wedding is the first dance. As one of the memories that any couple wants to preserve for a lifetime, anything to add extra "wow" factor to these few minutes is extremely valuable to photographers, videographers, and guests. While intimate lighting certainly creates an elegant scene, the thought of dancing on clouds is something of a fantasy-world idea.

Add in extra lighting or a moonlight backdrop for an even greater effect. The clouds here were created by this dry ice machine. Remember, this is NOT fog. There's no oily residue, no odor, and the clouds never rise, only dissipate.

This low-lying cloud is effect is perfect for the mobile wedding DJ or the bride looking to create that first dance on clouds. While the effect only lasts 5-6 minutes, most first dance songs only last that long.

Street price on the Nimbus does run about $999, but the upsell will be well worth it over the life of the product. Since there aren't any automated moving mechanical features, having the unit break down isn't very likely.

Another advantage to dry ice over a low lying fog machine, is that dry ice is merely solid carbon dioxide. While you should always consult a doctor in regards to any conditions, there are no additives or chemicals in dry ice that aren't found in our constant surrounding environment. Always be sure to ask your venue managers if you can have your first dance on clouds. It's extremely rare that this low-lying cloud would set off a smoke alarm system, but always better to be safe than sorry.

The Basics on How it Works

The Chauvet Nimbus functionality is simple. Place water inside the unit, drop in about 10 pounds of dry ice once the water is hot enough, and enjoy. With the exception of a drop bucket, there are no moving parts to it, and the physics of forced air push the cloud out to the floor.

Keep in mind that there's quite a bit of power draw. Using a single element (50-minute heat up time), takes up about 12.6 amps of a single circuit. Use the second element (30-minute heat up time), and you'll need a separate circuit to get all 25.6 amps required. Reheat time is about half of that, but most weddings only use this effect on the bride and groom's first dance.

Whether you're stepping into the world of lighting design, looking to step up your theatre lighting effects, or just a mobile DJ wanting to offer something more, DMX lighting can be both exciting and intimidating at the same time. What does DMX mean? Is programming difficult? Do I need DMX control for my lighting? What's a universe? Surely there's a lot to go over if you're just looking into DMX, and the information can often be overwhelming. At the same time, technology has afforded the opportunity for everyone from churches, to clubs, to private businesses, to offer something above and beyond the "set it and forget it" method.

1. DMX Lighting Puts You In Control

If you've ever simply used sound active, you know that the show is decent, and units today are highly responsive to their surrounding sound. You also feel that there's something missing. While built-in programming offers a variety of options, it's not always what you want. And once a light is on, turning it off requires turning off power, which means you'll be waiting for the unit to restart before you can reactivate your light show. With DMX programming, your lights remain powered up, and you control when the lights are active, where they go, the colors they show, how bright they are, and so much more (dependent on the light's DMX capability). Response to your DMX control is almost instant, and you'll feel secure knowing exactly what they're going to do next.

2. DMX Controller Software Makes it So Easy

If the first thing that crosses your mind about DMX is lighting is the need for a massive lighting board, we've got great news. DMX software has all but come full circle, whether you've got a few fixtures, or a few hundred fixtures. Control all of your lighting direct from you laptop! If you're just looking to get a feel for DMX software, ADJ's MyDMX Buddy is a great piece of hardware for beginners. MyDMX Buddy gives you 1/2 of a universe (or 256 channels) to work with, so make sure to account for all of the channels that your lighting uses. 3. DMX for Beginners Is More Affordable Than Ever

For the DMX lighting beginner, there's a common misconception that controllers and controller software canb expensive. But did you know that you can get a simple controller for as little as $50? While less expensive units like these are designed to control simple uplights or 3-channel effect lighting, there are inexpensive options like the Chauvet DJ Obey 40, which allows you to control 12 fixtures that use up to 16 channels each. DMX software, as mentioned before, runs as little as $99.99, with more versatile software interfaces starting around $300. It is true that the professional-grade hardware and software controller can get quite pricey, but the options for DMX beginners are more affordable than ever before.

4. DMX Control is Easy to Learn!

We're not saying that you're going to figure it out in 5 minutes, but once you've got the basics down, it's all uphill. The hardest things to learn about DMX lighting are the most basic points. Universes, channels, daisy-chaining, are all just big words with simple meaning. Programming isn't a computer term in this case, but a technical term for design. There's no code to learn, no typed commands (with the exception of highly advanced lighting design), no DOS window to use. In fact, the technology today has become more user-friendly than ever, so once the bus starts moving, there's no stopping how far you can go.

When folded up, it takes up half of the space of a small speaker. When opened up, your world can change. Haul literally everything you take to your gig in one or two trips. Rocky terrain? No problem? In January of 2016, Pioneer revealed their own DJ software called rekordboxdj (it's even in lowercase for a cooler look). Since then, Pioneer has released DJ controllers that were targeted at this endeavor versus their previous releases that utilize a Serato DJ license, and it's been a good move on Pioneer's part thus far. Today, Pioneer is expanding their software creations into the world of the iPad with the WeDJ app.

With "play" and "cue" buttons that mimic that of their world-class media players, Pioneer is bringing WeDJ to the app store to capture a corner of the market they haven't quite seized up. While their famous DDJ-WeGo family of controllers have been a hit, they've relied either on Serato or another iPad app for music playback, so the move isn't all that surprising following the release (and success) of rekordoxdj.

The Layout
The layout and design of WeDJ is intuitive, but simple. The setup could mimic that of an entry level DJ controller, just based off of different screen views. Within the app, you can easily access your sampler, hot cues, FX, etc., and still have quick access to each of the virtual jog wheels on the screen. The track listings are clear and come complete with waveform preview for those that hear music with their eyes. Waveform playback can be displayed either horizontally or vertically, and of course, the sync button is readily available for when you just don't feel like trying to beat match. It's okay. We love all DJs, new and old. There's also an "Automix" button for those that are just looking to mix some tunes without doing any of the legwork. This is a solid feature for cocktail hours, the end of the night at a bar gig, or when you want to DJ your own wedding (we don't actually recommend this).

What's So Different?
It seems to be general consensus that we all have either fat fingers or small devices, which means the layout of a DJ app is usually simple and clear. Pioneer doesn't stray from this strategy, and the screenshots above show just that. What separates Pioneer from other apps is that Pioneer manufactures their own DJ controllers. Touting that the app works in conjunction with the DDJ-WeGo3 and the soon to be released DDJ-WeGo4 is something that no other app developer can do while only speaking to their own brand. Other apps set themselves up with other popular DJ controller manufacturers to give better performance control than just touchscreen access.

Outdoor weddings, backyard BBQs, beach parties, camping...there are dozens of reasons we can think of that you'd need to get sound where there's no power. Bluetooth has made it possible to take the music with us, but in the event of a party, portable speakers aren't the easiest thing to come by until lately. While there is no absolute way to really purify a record, there are ways to clean them, and there's plenty of research that's gone into the some of these ideas for keeping your vinyl around a while.

With more than a million fibers on the brush, you get a deep, yet gentle cleaning in the grooves of your vinyl. The ability to broadcast audio, fly lighting and even control our music through wireless resources is a reality. Unfortunately, wiring is still a part of our setups. Best DJ Controllers for Beginners

At Planet DJ, we've more than immersed ourselves in the DJ controller world. The DJ controller is now at the forefront of the digital dj era, and there are more than enough to choose from. At last count as of this post, there were more than 120 DJ controllers from major manufacturers, and most of them offer something different. So as someone who is just starting out, we wouldn't be surprised that it's difficult to decide on the best dj controller for beginners. Thankfully, we've got lots of experience in this department, and we'll help clear a few things up.

Before you get started, it's important to gain a bit of an idea of what you're looking for. With such a saturated area of the DJ world, you'll get lost in the features, and be completely indecisive as to what you need and what you don't need. It can almost be intimidating as well, with some controllers costing nearly $2,000 (which may not represent the budget of a beginner DJ), and some costing under $100 (which may not have the right features). So read through this, and hopefully, you'll have an idea of what's right for you soon enough.

Things to Consider When Shopping Beginner DJ Controllers

1. Don't Ignore the Software Bundled, but Don't Let it Influence You Too Much
Yes, Serato, Traktor, and Virtual DJ are in fact the most used DJ softwares on the market. But if you've never heard of any of them, then don't let it push your decision one way or the other. There are DJs out there that would argue that the one they use is better, and you should use it. Fact is, the general ease of use and feel to each piece of software is quite similar. Additionally, should you decide that you want to use another piece of software, there are many mappings available to allow you to make the switch without ditching your controller (we'll address mapping in another entry).

2. Remember The Audio Card!

You're probably lost already on this one if you've done no research so far. There's a very simple way to tell if a DJ controller has an audio card. If the controller only has a single USB connection on it, with no headphone jack and no master outputs (like RCA or XLR jacks), then you have no audio card. What this means is that you're relying solely on the audio output of your laptop, or will need to purchase an additional audio interface or specialty cable to use your headphones and preview songs before you play them. If you're looking to make DJing a thing, remember to look for those audio jacks on the back of the unit, it simplifies the entire process of getting yourself set up for the first time. We always recommend XLR (balanced audio) for a better sound, but most beginner DJ controllers have RCA, which will work just fine if you don't have the experience just yet. We know the low price of a controller without an audio card is SUPER tempting, but please take this into consideration. We can't recommend this enough.

3. Consider Your Budget, But Stretch it if You Can

There seem to be several levels of budgeting. If your'e out for the cheapest controller you can find, chances are you're going to be very upset when it arrives. In most cases, there are plenty of DJ controllers dangling just a little bit above your current budget range. Our advice would be that if you can wait it out until your budget grows a bit, then save up for something better! If you settle for a controller in the $150 range, and the $250 range has features that are much more appealing to you, hold out. You'll shoot yourself in the foot if you act too fast. We know the feeling of starting from literally nothing, and we can tell you that these slight improvements in features that you wait for are well worth it, and can seriously enhance how quickly your DJ game moves forward.

4. Start High, Buy Low

In order to understand the features that come with the more expensive controllers, and the features that come with lesser expensive controller, make sure to do your shopping. A little research can go a long way, and you'll quickly understand why DJ controllers cost what they do sometimes. Rather than starting your price range searching under $200, start it under $500. It's not to say that we expect you to buy a $500 controller, but reading up on these things will really give you a feel for what a controller should have and what you're willing to settle for.

5. Consider Your Own Scenario

Your buddy works a nightclub, rocking a top of the line DJ controller. You've decided that you want to get into this too. Great! Welcome to the world of DJing, it's gonna get harder from here. Considering what you're going to do with that controller should play a huge role in your choice. If you're going to just play some tunes in your bedroom here and there and just want to control your music for fun, perhaps a DJ controller without an Audio Card is the perfect choice! But if you want to learn to mix, keymatch, beatmatch, scratch, juggle, flip and any other DJ term that you've come across, you really need to step up your DJ controller game a bit. If you want to scratch and you've got a simple USB only controller, you're going to find yourself struggling a bit. Having the capability to listen to songs before you play them is huge, especially early on.

6. One Final Note

We're pretty sure you've heard DJs say what's the best, the standard, the thing everyone uses. Our advice is to listen to them a little bit. If you buy a higher end controller, while it can be intimidating at first, when you've got the skills to move forward, you've already got the controller to move forward! This is why we say focus on the features. If you move from a low-feature controller to a high-feature controller, you're going to be just as lost as if you went straight to the high feature controller. So if you're looking to make a DJ career out of this, then professional level controllers really are the best DJ controllers for beginners. You'll learn how to use everything in time. Don't sell yourself short if you have high hopes.

CHECK OUT THE EZ WEDGE TRI

The Wedge Tri and EZ Wedge Tri from Chauvet are smaller uplighting units, with 3, 3-watt RGB LEDs. While nothing fancy in terms of versatile colors, they were designed to be a powerful uplighting solution that would fit into the smaller spaces of units like a Goal Post or Arch Truss, often used by the mobile DJ. The best part about these solutions is their size. No longer than 4.3" on any given side, they fit into nearly any triangle trussing that you might have, and their lack of bulkiness makes them easy to put in and take out of your trussing, whether you have a portable or permanent setup. The included IRC remote makes line-of-sight control a snap.

The Chauvet Wedge Tri is a hard-line powered triangle uplight, and features power-linking, allowing you to daisy chain units that might be in the same truss setup. The Chauvet EZ Wedge Tri is a battery-powered unit, and while it doesn't have power linking, it will run up to 20 hours on a single charge, and offers a simple battery power indicator, so you always know when it's time to juice up your lighting again

While they aren't large, the size of these units is nothing to balk at. Driving 3 watts of LED power per LED, you get plenty of light out of a small package. The LCD screen makes it easy to set up your lighting for DMX or simply place it into auto-run or sound active mode. We're always hoping for these little guys to get an upgrade to more LED color, but for now, this is the perfect solution if you're looking for lighting on your triangle truss.

An LED moving head with built in "Micro Galaxian" style laser? If you don't know, the Micro Galaxian red and green laser was a standard for the mobile DJ that wanted a low power laser with a lot of effect. Adding that into the Inno Pocket Spot is sure to make the LZR a hit come the release date in a few months.

Cables and Adapters
Have a variety of cables and/or adapters for any situation. If an amplifier were to go down, would the current amplifier be able to handle “daisy-chaining” your speakers, and do you have the right cables to connect them, including XLR to ¼, XLR to RCA, ¼ to RCA, Speakon to Banana, or any possible connection that you would need? When you can, bring backup gear, just in case something goes down, including backup mixers, amps, monitors, extra cables, etc. During the 2010 Burning Man, Bassnectar’s audio interface would not work and he was not able to play at Root Society because he didn't have a backup with him.

Gear Protection
When leaving camp consider covering the equipment before you head out, even if it is just a garbage bag over the speakers. If you suspect that a sand storm is coming, consider moving what equipment you can into cars for better protection. Flight cases, Decksavers and covers for the gear are perfect to minimize the amount of playa dust that gets into the gear.

Playa Dust
Dust of any kind is the enemy of all electronics. It acts as a thermal insulator, and causes the gear covered in it to operate at a higher temperature. Once the temperature exceeds whatever the component/chip/resistor/etc can handle, it stops working. Playa dust is especially harmful not only because the particles are so fine, but because the alkali content acts as a mildly corrosive agent. Compressed air or canned air can help clean out the gear while on the playa. If you really want to be dust-free, think positive pressure ventilation and HEPA filtration.

Equipment Cooling
Keep the equipment as cool as you can. Place your equipment in shaded areas to prevent overheating and causing damage to the equipment. Part of that is keeping the equipment off of the playa itself, as the playa retains and transfers lots of heat. If you are using stands, make sure that they are well secured. The winds/sand storms can easily knock over equipment. 

Lighting for Burning Man
LED lighting is the way to go on the playa. It uses significantly less power, creates less heat and there's practically no maintenance involved. Par cans and uplighting are the most common effect lights used to light up camps at night.

Amended: Battery-Powered LED Lighting
LED lighting's low use of power allows for a bit of saving grace with so little access to electricity. Battery-powered LED lighting has come a long way, with some lighting lasting up to 20 hours on a single charge.

Power Generators
Generators are necessary for amplified sound and lighting on the playa, they are beneficial to you, but can impact those camped around you. Taken from the BurningMan.com website: “The hum of generators can become annoying over a long period of time. Please keep your neighbors in mind. We recommend generators that are sound insulated. DO NOT dig a trench to sound-insulate your generator. Rather, enclose it in a wooden box.”

Power Conditioners
Power conditioners are key to protecting your equipment more than in the default world. Power from generators is inconsistent (at best) and could cause some serious problems if you equipment is not protected. 

Sound Regulation
BurningMan.com website regarding sound in camps: "As a community, we need to work together to keep sound at desirable levels. This means that everyone involved is personally responsible for how they affect everyone else's experience. If your neighbor believes your sound is too loud, you must work with them to find an acceptable volume. You will need to check in with those that you are camped near to find out what other events are planned and work with them to create a schedule. With these actions you should be able to handle all of your own sound issues. If everyone works together there will be no need for Black Rock Rangers to monitor sound. Please pass this information around to other participants in your theme camp or village and to those that are not planning on being listed on the map. A community effort is need to pull this off."

Returning from Burning Man
When returning from the playa, take the time to clean out the gear and wipe down with a water and white vinegar solution. Some equipment will have to be wiped down a few times to take off the playa dust.  

NOTE: Unfortunately, products that are purchased for use at Burning Man, or that show any signs of playa dust, are non-returnable. In almost all cases, playa dust will void your manufacturer's warranty of new products (it's often considered abuse or neglect). Taking the time to protect your investments can give them years of happy life.

Initial releases will include modified versions of the Chauvet Colorstrip, The Chauvet Min RBX laser, the Chauvet Followspot, and the Chauvet Swarm. Lights have optional camouflage tailored to your needs, and come complete with universal mounting brackets, including a snorkel mount, allowing you to take the electric lighting under water.

Chauvet Truck Series Studies have also revealed that the lights are more effective than the original fog lights designed for pickup trucks today, with ability to not only mesmerize wild game, but humans as well. It is not known yet if highway patrols will allow the lights to be used when a car is in motion.

JUST KIDDING! APRIL FOOLS!

All DJs and lighting specialists already know that these days, it is possible to synthesize excited bromide in an argon matrix. With the current testings, Chauvet has been able to extract 10^21 photons/cm3, which gives 1 kilojoule/cm3 at 600nm, or 1 megajoule/liter...that's hotter than the sun.

While lasers and beams have often been combined into a single unit, they've never come from the same source. Chauvet's Incinerator Spot 450 Laserbeam is going to change how lighting is designed. Early successful testing first came from the Death Star, but that testing unit was wiped out by a lucky shot from Luke Skywalker. Fortunately, Chauvet has shared some testing video from their lab in Florida.

As of now, the Incinerator Spot 450 is still in early testing phases. While the technology has been around since 1984, the concept of placing it into such a small housing has been difficult to achieve, especially considering that each sample destroys itself upon firing.

Due for release on April 1st, 2214. Perhaps you should check out the Intimidator Spot 450 before then.
